Thursday night, September 19th, the Mohawk was a whirlwind of energy as Australian hardcore band Speed took the stage, delivering an electrifying performance that had fans buzzing long after the last note faded.

While approaching the Mohawk, there was no denying the crowd’s intensity, with cheers and music overflowing out into the street. The bleachers were packed, and a mosh pit raged below as fans threw themselves into the music of the bands performing before Speed. As I made my way toward the stage, multiple mosh pits erupted, the crowd fully immersed in the raw energy of the hardcore rock music. The atmosphere was electric, with an adrenaline-fueled intensity feel through the venue.

The Mohawk in Austin, TX, known for its ambiance and vibrant atmosphere, was the perfect backdrop for Speed’s explosive show. Fans of all ages packed the venue, eager to experience the band’s exhilarating sound live.

From the moment they kicked off the night, mosh pits erupted as fans rushed to the front, mirroring the band’s saying, “SPEED.” This phrase, which declares their hardcore approach to music, perfectly diving into the energy of the evening all while being the name of the band. The hardcore punk bank hailing from Sydney, Australia, Speed has captured the attention of hardcore fans worldwide. Known for their blistering tempos, aggressive lyrics, and explosive live shows, the band embodies the heart of the punk scene. After dropping Demo 19, Speed signed with Flatspot Records and has since released several singles and an EP. Earlier this year, on July 12th, they unleashed their debut full-length album, “ONLY ONE MODE,” a fierce collection of tracks showcasing their signature blend of relentless energy and hardcore spirit.

Throughout the night, lead vocalist Jem Siow, bass guitarist Aaron Siow, guitarist Joshua Clayton, guitarist Dennis Vichidvongsa, and drummer Kane Vardon all actively engaged the audience, holding the mic in the crowd for them to scream the lyrics with the band and calling for more people to mosh and do flips off the stage. The connection between the band and the fans was impeccable, creating an atmosphere where strangers became friends amidst the exhilarating chaos.

Mosh pits continued to swell as the band seamlessly transitioned between hard-hitting tracks and melodic moments, allowing brief respites before diving back into the fray. The highlight of the show was the opening song, and my favorite song of theirs, “REAL LIFE LOVE,” which starts off with Jem Siow playing the flute then transitioning to hard vocals and heavy riffs. The concert was not just a showcase of their music; it was a celebration of the culture of Australian hardcore and the community it fosters. Jem Siow has even explained how some of their music is a reaction to the failed leadership of their government during the 2019-2020 Australian bushfires.

The show concluded with an electrifying encore that left fans craving more. As the final chords rang, the audience erupted in applause, high fiving the members, and even some fans jumping on stage as a testament to the night’s success. Many lingered after the show, sharing their experiences and discussing the sheer exhilaration of the performance. Speed’s concert at the Mohawk was a thrilling reminder of the raw power of live music and the bond it creates. For those lucky enough to attend, it was an experience that will be remembered. As the band leaves to continue their tour in the states, Austin, TX will not forget this unforgettable night in the spotlight of hardcore music.
