San Marcos, Texas— The Texas State women’s volleyball team saw their 2024 season come to an end Thursday night, falling in three consecutive sets to Missouri (25-16, 25-22, 25-22) in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. Despite the loss, the Bobcats capped off a remarkable season filled with grit, resilience, and milestones.
Led by head coach Sean Huiet, the Bobcats finished the year with a 22-9 overall record and claimed their first Sun Belt Conference Championship in the past four seasons. The team’s success solidified their position as a powerhouse in the conference, earning them an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Facing a formidable Missouri squad, the Bobcats struggled to find consistency on offense. Samantha Wunsch led Texas State with nine kills, while true freshman MJ McCurdy tallied seven kills but also committed eight errors in the match. Redshirt senior setter Ryann Torres contributed 24 assists in her final collegiate game, showcasing the leadership that defined her career.
Texas State was hampered by 20 team errors, which allowed Missouri to capitalize on key points throughout the match.
Missouri’s Mychael Vernon dominated at the net, leading all players with 20 kills, while Marina Crownover orchestrated the Tigers’ offense with 40 assists. Missouri’s balanced attack and superior efficiency ultimately proved too much for Texas State to overcome.
With the departure of key veterans, including Torres, the Bobcats will lean on a talented core of returning players. McCurdy’s freshman season provides hope for her growth into a consistent offensive weapon, while other underclassmen are expected to step into larger roles in 2025.
