SAN MARCOS, Texas — Texas State came up short against TCU Baseball despite their best efforts, losing to the Horned Frogs 5-3 on Tuesday night at Bobcat Ballpark.
Jackson Tear started on the mound for the Bobcats, throwing two frames with one strikeout and allowed a run on three hits. Matthew Tippie and Carson laws threw two innings each out of the bullpen working together to get a combined five strikeouts.
Getting the win for TCU was Nate Stern. With Two innings from the bullpen with five strikeouts only giving up one run and one hit. Cohen Feser got the save, his first of the season, with a perfect ninth inning.
For the Bobcats, Alan Shibley went 2-for-4 at the plate with a solo home run. Zachary Gingrich also hit a solo homer and Chase Mora hit an RBI single.
TCU struck first, scoring from third on a wild pitch.
Gingrich then tied the game, crushing a 1-2 delivery 430 feet over the left center field for his first homerun of the season.
“We’ve got to continue to find guys to fill it up” said Texas State Head Coach Steven Trout. “You saw the stuff tonight, we got power stuff, we got to continue to fill it up and give ourselves a chance.”
The Horned Frogs answered with a run of their own in the top of the third to retake the lead.
In the bottom of the third, Ryne Farber had a four pitch walk then stole second. After advancing to third on a groundout by Mora, Farber would beat out the throw from first to home to tie the game 2-2.
The TCU Horned Frogs would then score a run in each of the next two innings, gaining the lead 4-2.
Shibley led off the sixth by sending a solo shot over the right field wall for his first homerun as a Bobcat, adding a run to the board making it 4-3.
“We’ve seen what Shibley can do,” said Trout. “We’ve got those guys and other guys that can do things for us, so we just got to stay afloat while we get those guys healthy and they’re going back in the lineup”
The final run of the ball game would come from TCU’s Jack Bell on a solo homerun.
“You look at our midweek games and really haven’t had a just an off game of playing somebody that’s not that good,” said Trout. “We’re going to learn from it, be better from it, and yeah App State will be ready to roll at home opening conference, and you know for us it’s kind of a use it as a new season to take a breath of fresh air, to throw the stats away and you kind of start to clean the slate clean and go play.”
The Bobcats are now 8-8 on the season and open Sun Belt conference play in North Carolina this weekend with a three game weekend series against Appalachian State.
