SAN MARCOS, Texas – Freshman centerfielder, Caden Baker earned his first collegiate hit, an inside the park home run, during Texas State Baseball’s 5-4 victory against the Arkansas State Red Wolves at Bobcat Ballpark on Saturday, March 22.
Baker’s homer also ran in Samson Pugh for a double RBI in the second inning.
“Caden will never forget that one, I was just joking with him before the game, ‘like, hey, it’s about time for you to get your first college hit,’” head coach Steven Trout said. “Inside the park was not on my bingo card today, but what a great job by him on getting that swing.”
Texas State utilized three pitchers throughout the game with Jesus Tovar as the starter. Tovar pitched six innings, allowed three earned runs and had six strikeouts.
The Red Wolves third run came in the fourth inning from Patrick Engskov who advanced home as a fly ball was hit to right field.
Matthew Tippie relieved Tovar and pitched two innings recording three strikeouts and earned his first recorded win (1-0). The Red Wolves added one to the board during his two innings, an unearned run due to a balk call.
The Red Wolves earned their first two runs in the third inning off a double RBI from Carson Tollett.
Arkansas State had four total pitchers. Their starter, Andrew Allen, pitched three innings and allowed three earned runs. Among the four they totaled five strikeouts versus Texas States 11.
Baker and Dawson Park are both new freshman who have made an impact on the batting lineup considering recent season ending injuries for staple players Ethan Ferris and Sam Hall, both confirmed by Trout.
“You [have to] put the team success ahead of the personal success. You got to find a way to be ready,” Trout said. “They say that the adage is, next man up, and it definitely, this year has definitely been the definition of this team.”
Junior Bryson Dudley finished the game, pitching only the ninth inning. He faced four batters and recorded two strikeouts showing his strength as a closer to be utilized throughout the season.
Texas State is now 2-0 for the weekend in a three-game series against the Red Wolves.
The Bobcats will play the third and final game against Arkansas on Sunday, March 23 at 1 p.m. at Bobcat Ballpark.

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State took down the Arkansas State Red Wolves 6-3 on Sunday afternoon at Bobcat Ballpark, completing the first series sweep against a conference opponent since 2023.
Starting pitcher Jackson Teer secured his first win of the season for the Bobcats with this win bringing his record to 1-4. Teer threw seven innings, allowing two runs on two hits and struck out five.
“It felt very nice out there. I have been wanting my first one and I’m glad I got it, it helps when your guys get you a four-run lead early.” said Teer.
Carson Laws came in the ninth inning and recorded the final three outs to record his fifth save of the season.
Jack Hibbard was the first of many pitchers on the mound for the Red Wolves on Sunday as he threw only one inning and recorded zero strikeouts along with four runs on seven hits and a home run.
Junior first baseman Chase Mora had a career day, going 4-4 at the plate where he drove in three runs with two doubles and a home run. Mora was only a triple away from the cycle.
“I have the opportunity to set the tone for the offense every day and I think with how I’ve been swinging lately, I can do it in multiple different ways to help the offense in any way I can.” said Mora.
Mora crushed a ball past left field and into the stratosphere for a three-run homer and gave the Bobcats a 4-0 lead through two innings.
The Red Wolves would finally get their first hit of the game when Drake Anderson had a two-run home run in the fourth inning to cut the lead to 4-2.
In the fourth, Mora once again delivered a double, stealing third base and home plate off a throwing error. Texas State led 5-2 after four innings.
With the score at 6-3, Arkansas State failed to score in the ninth and the game would end there.
“We went and got swept so we knew we had to sweep somebody back.” said Texas State head coach Stephen Trout. “Now that we got the winning taste back, we just [have to] have a good week. It’s a big week and just keep doing what we need to.”
Texas State has two midweek contests with the first being another addition to the I-35 rivalry as they go to San Antonio to take on UTSA. The Bobcats come back to San Marcos on Wednesday to face Incarnate Word.
