The New Wave: Rising Voices Shaping the Future of Rap

2025 has been an undeniably remarkable year for rap music. Groundbreaking releases from established titans such as Tyler, the Creator, Clipse, and JID have captivated audiences and further demonstrated their powerful influence in the industry. As the music industry continues to evolve and embrace the digital age, new voices emerge, molding new sounds in hip-hop culture. These musical innovators are shaping the future of rap by challenging industry norms, bending genres, and carving out spaces for their sound to be heard. By bringing a new, exciting energy into the field, these artists have stood as promising up-and-comers.   

Jev.  

This Congolese-Canadian rapper first popped out in 2022 when his song “where’s the confetti” went viral on TikTok. Jev.’s experimental landscape fuses old school hip-hop with modern R&B flows. What’s impressive about Jev. is how dynamic his sound is. He pairs groovy beats with an emotionally driven delivery. The vocal inflections and layering in “HOLD MY LIQUIOR” are gripping, making you feel his words through his voice. The track “YOU CRY LOVE” resembles the sound of IDK, as he creates a textured atmosphere by incorporating his voice in the beat. He continues to curate his loner persona and show off his lively sound in his newest release, LONERWRLD, vol 2. Through his experimental production and vocal intimacy, Jev. cultivates a cinematic soundscape, allowing the listeners to resonate with his messages.    

Gao the Arsonist  

If you want a darker, more haunting experience, I would check out Gao the Arsonist. This UK artist has garnered a cult like following through his experimental and uncompromising sound. He often mixes harsh noises with ghostly silence, creating an eerie and soul-stirring atmosphere. The underground nature of his music allows Gao to push boundaries, exploring themes of violence, alienation, depression, and societal decay. His track “RIGHT BETWEEN THE EYES” will have you on edge as he simultaneously teases and anticipates danger, stating, “You would have to hit me right between the eyes/I’d pay good money just to see you try.” The horror inspired production style, combined with his unfiltered lyrics, immerses you into a world I would best describe as post-apocalyptic.  

Lexa Gates  

Lexas Gate’s ability to balance vulnerability and confidence sets her apart from other artists. Based in Queens, New York City, she blends R&B and hip-hop elements in her laid-back but expressive style. Gates remains honest about her mental state without compromising her worth or ambition. Her song, “Stacy’s Chips,” resonates as she battles with overwhelming feelings of remaining productive and healthy.  In her track “Past It,” she showcases her catchy flow and resilience, reflecting on the uncertainties faced while pursuing her dreams and celebrating how far she has come. Lexa Gate’s feminine but assertive style makes her stand out. It is definitely worth tuning into her journey to watch her grow as an artist.  

La Reezy  

At only 20 years old, La Reezy brings back energy with his soulful trap-inspired beats. The New Orleans rapper has crafted a sound that is both nostalgic and unique. His track, “HARDHEAD,” blends old-school hip-hop beats with jazzy trumpets and melodic piano. The youthful energy is apparent in his song, “Hungry Flows,” as he reminisces on his childhood in a humorous but uplifting way. La Reezy’s delivery and style remind me of Teezo Touchdown in the way he utilizes distinct vocal inflections to stress emotions and importance. In the chorus of “I Look Good,” you can hear him stretch his syllables, which has a satisfying and attention-grabbing effect. La Reezy’s unique sound, humorous delivery, and soulful beats showcase his remarkable confidence and perseverance as a young artist.  

ARDN 

In an interview with CBC Music, ARDN states that music is his form of therapy. When it comes to confidence, vulnerability, and self-expression, he never misses. His delivery is reminiscent of Tory Lanez, as his sound adheres to the beat as if they were perfectly matched. On the laid-back but bouncy-sounding track “Jupiter & Mars,” he dissects the complexities of a romantic relationship, delving into ego, self-awareness, and the need for a deeper connection. Another standout track is “Wishing Well.” This song carries me into a flow state with its entrancing and spellbinding melody. ARDN showcases his more intense side on his latest release, KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE SPARROW. His effortless transitions, coupled with his passionate delivery on the tracks “TMTK,” “HUMBLE PIE,” and “RAIN CHECK,” are otherworldly and mesmerizing. ARDN’s music can be best described as seamless; his flows will take you on a journey of self-acceptance and love. 

Hanumankind  

The final artist on my list is Hanumankind. Born in Kerala, India, but raised in Houston, Texas, this rapper, singer, and songwriter debuted his EP “Kalari” in 2019. I first stumbled upon him through the Color Show performance of his song “Holiday” on YouTube. Watching him groove while performing his song was captivating. His energy is kinetic, and he has this distinctive drawl in his voice that really stood out to me. What’s unique about his sound is the cultural fusion of traditional Indian instruments in his beats, which you can encounter in his tracks “Run It Up” and “Go Sleep.” In one of his more popular songs, “Big Dawgs,” you can experience a room-shaking beat. His hard-hitting flow is perfect for when you need to release some energy and let loose. Hanumankind’s unique sound, energy, and cultural impact set him apart from other up-and-comers in the industry.  

Social media has really opened the rap music genre, making it more diverse than ever. With their innovative and dynamic sound, these new voices are paving the way for the future of rap. The rap scene is vibrant with exciting new energy, and these artists are definitely worth a listen.
