Far from being just a Tik Tok Artist, Doja Cat has secured her place as the top leading voice in pop. Proving herself once again, we should take her seriously.  Although at times, artists run the risk of changing their identity, Doja Cat refuses to define herself. What truly sets her apart is the constant reinvention of each album. Whether it’s her debut album Hot Pink or her latest album Vie, she continues to experiment with new sounds.

The highly anticipated 5th studio album release Vie features a 15-song track list. Using her signature style rap with retro synthpop production, she created an 80s inspired album. Doja Cat teamed up with producer, Jack Antonoff, who helped influence the album’s direction.

Hardly any promotion of the lead single, “Jealous Type” could have easily been the song of the summer if released sooner. The songs appealing lyrics of devotion and jealousy are met with a retro sound. The song highlights a softer return following her darker album, Scarlet.

Running it back with SZA for track “Take me Dancing” feels like the second edition of hit song “Kiss Me More”. The blend of their vocals gives the same kind of magical connection that made their previous collaboration so captivating.  Among the several samples, the use of the 1982 television series Knight Rider theme song for “Ahh Men” perfectly aligns with the albums concept.

Each tracks flows naturally with each, showcasing the constancy of the album. Doja’s shift from singing and rapping is effortlessly clean, making it natural. Doja’s latest release deserves a place on your playlist because of its slick sampling, clever lyrics, and delivery.

Although Vie is the least streamed album from her discography, this current release portrays Doja Cat as the most creative and expressive. The artistic vision reflects her work as an artist rather than another trend.
