SAN MARCOS, Texas– The Texas State Bobcats keep the Texas Southern Tigers winless in the regular season, defeating the Tigers 77-67 in Strahan Arena Saturday afternoon.
Texas State kept the lead throughout the game and had as much as a 24-point lead early in the second quarter. The Bobcats shot 53% from the field and 33% from three. The Tigers would go 42.6% from the field and 25% from three.
Mark Drone led the Bobcats in scoring with 19 points, going 5-10 from the field, and 8-10 on free throws. DJ Hall shot 8-12 from the field against the Tigers, finishing with 16 points while grabbing seven rebounds. Makai Willis finished the night with 12 points. Off the bench, Kyndall Davis contributed seven rebounds, tied for the team lead.
The Bobcats struggled with turnovers, with 17 in the game, the most in a win this season. After the game, head coach Terrence Johnson stressed the importance of not turning the ball over.
“There are a couple of different ways you can win, one is pretty, one is gritty. And we were the latter,” said Johnson. “We turned the ball over a little too much tonight, our number is 11, and we’re a better team than that, and we’ll look at the film and try to improve.”
Freshman DJ Hall talked after the game about the mentorship and teachings Senior Makai Willis has given him so far this season.
“He’s a very strong guy, and he doesn’t let me play weak; he plays through contact a lot, and he showed me how different contact is from high school to the college level.”
The Bobcats are undefeated at home and have a 3-2 record on the season. They’ll continue their home stretch of games against the Abilene Christian Wildcats on Tuesday night.
