The Bobcats Pull Off an Exciting Win Over the Thundering Herd at Home

SAN MARCOS, Texas- The Texas State Bobcats win another game at home, defeating the Marshall Thundering Herd in a 72-68 nail-biter. Seniors Mark Drone and Kyndall Davis led the team in scoring with a combined 32 points. But it was San Marcos native, Junior Kaden Gumbs, who hit a massive three to give the Bobcats the lead with 21 seconds left in the game.  

On top of hitting the game-winning three, Gumbs contributed 10 total points and 3 assists. The Bobcats also got massive contributions off the bench from Senior Jalen Bolden and Freshman Robert Fields, totaling 20 of the 22 points scored off the bench.  

The Bobcats controlled the game in the first half, shooting 55.6% from the field and going into the locker room with a 39-29 lead. But the team’s second-half struggles continued, shooting only 35.5% from the field and losing as big as a 14-point lead to the Thundering Herd.  

Head Coach Terrence Johnson spoke with us about Kaden Gumbs’ character and the big shot that won the game.  

“That moment couldn’t happen for a better person, when you’re a hometown kid, those are the moments you dream about, and he’s been putting in the work.” 

We spoke with Mark Drone after the game, where he shared the conversation he had with Kaden Gumbs before he hit the game-winning three.  

“He was down because he missed the shot before. I told him to keep going; the next one will fall. We know he can make those shots.”  

This game marks the eleventh win at home this season, joined by one away win, making the Bobcats’ record 12-11, 5-6 in conference, and tenth in the Sun Belt Conference. This game also marks the 100th career win at Texas State for Head Coach Terrence Johnson.  

When asked about his career milestone after the game, Johnson said, “It hasn’t settled in for him yet, and when I sit down and take a breather, maybe it will settle in.”  

The Bobcats look to keep the momentum going into Saturday’s homecoming game, as they will take on the Old Dominion Monarchs at home.
