SAN MARCOS- Texas State University has been recognized as a Fulbright Top Producing Institution for the 2025-26 academic year, placing the university among a group of colleges nationwide whose students and recent alumni were selected for the Fulbright U.S. Student Program.
The designation, announced by the Fulbright Program earlier this month, honors institutions with the highest number of Fulbright award recipients. Texas State is one of 96 colleges and universities across the United States to receive the recognition and one of three universities in Texas to earn the title this year.
Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, the Fulbright Program is an international academic and cultural exchange initiative. The program supports students pursuing independent research, graduate study or English teaching opportunities abroad.
For the upcoming academic year, three Texas State students — two undergraduates and one graduate student — were selected as Fulbright U.S. Student Program awardees. University officials said the recognition reflects student initiative and the expansion of campus resources aimed at supporting international academic opportunities.
Dr. Brian Smith, the primary Fulbright Graduate Program adviser at Texas State, said the recognition highlights the willingness of Texas State students to engage globally across a range of academic fields.
“We have a talented student population who are willing to try new things and who are interested in engaging in the world through all fields of study,” said Smith. “This recognition shows that Texas State is a really good fit for the Fulbright U.S. Student Program.”
Smith said the university’s success is not limited to a single department or discipline. Fulbright applicants at Texas State come from academic backgrounds ranging from the sciences and social sciences to the arts and humanities.
In recent years, Texas State has expanded outreach and advising for Fulbright applicants, supporting undergraduate students, graduate students and recent alumni throughout the application process. According to university officials, that investment has contributed to Texas State producing more Fulbright U.S. Student Program grantees in the past four years than in the previous four decades combined.
For students, the Fulbright application process can be a meaningful academic experience, regardless of whether they receive the award. Smith described the process as one that encourages students to reflect on their academic interests, career goals and global engagement.
“The application process forces students to think critically about what they want to study, where they want to go, and why their work matters,” said Smith. “Even students who don’t receive the award often walk away with a clearer sense of direction.”
Smith said one common misconception among students is that Fulbright is only for those with perfect academic records or extensive international experience. He said applicants are evaluated holistically, with emphasis placed on curiosity, adaptability and the ability to represent Texas State abroad.
University administrators said the university’s growing presence within the Fulbright Program also benefits the campus community. Students who return from Fulbright-funded experiences often bring back academic perspectives, research insights and cultural awareness that shape classrooms, student organizations and future projects.
Founded in 1946, the Fulbright Program operates in more than 160 countries and territories. Its alumni include leaders in government, education, science, business and the arts, as well as Nobel Prize recipients, Pulitzer Prize recipients and heads of state.
Smith encourages Texas State students and recent alumni interested in studying, researching or teaching abroad to explore the program and seek advising early.
“Participating in the process helps students recognize their own potential,” said Smith. “Sometimes that’s the most important outcome.”
