Revisiting The Maria’s Submarine

The year 2024 was a great year for a lot of things in music, with albums from some of the most prominent names in music, such as Tyler, the Creator’s Chromakopia, Kendrick Lamar’s GNX, and, of course, Charli XCX’s Brat, which took the world by storm, pioneering the term “Brat Summer”. However, today I want to highlight one album in particular called Submarine by the Marias.  

The Maria’s Second Studio album, Submarine, was a top album in 2024 after dropping on May 31st, which helped catapult the group into stardom. However, this album was a challenging one to make for the band themselves. It’s apparent when you listen to the album that it was made with such thoughtfulness and care, but one could also notice the emotions that are displayed throughout every track. At its core, the Marias are a band comprised of four individuals: Lead Singer Maria Zardoya, Drummer/Producer Josh Conway, Guitarist Jesse Perlman, and Keyboardist Edward James. Originally, the band was started by Maria and Josh as a couple; however, two years before the album was released when recording the couple broke up, almost causing the band to split. However, after Group Therapy and a 6 month hiatus where the band was able to tend to their loved ones and focus on themselves. However, after Josh and Maria decided to keep the band going. Submarine is a byproduct of all the emotions that Maria was feeling. In an article published by Grammy.com, Maria talks about Submarine and what it means to her: “It is my perspective on heartbreak, which can be interpreted in so many different ways,” says singer/songwriter María Zardoya. Now, finally diving into the album, it has 14 tracks with a 45-minute run time. While I highly recommend listening to the whole album, I will only be highlighting a few in this article. The first song I wanted to highlight was Run Your Mouth, which was one of the first songs Maria and Josh wrote for Submarine. Maria stated that the song came at a time when she was very conflicted and avoidant at the time. The song is a very upbeat song that just makes you want to dance and have a good time with others.

The next song I wanted to highlight was ” No One Noticed, ” a very emotional song on the album. It’s an emotional account of Maria being torn up by her lover and feeling unnoticed by her partner. I highly suggest listening to this song if you’re in your feels or just wanna hear some great tunes. Last up is, coincidentally, the last track on the album “sienna”. The song is about a broken relationship and what could have been a future, often referencing a girl named Sienna, insinuating that she was the child who never had the chance to be born as a result. I recommend this song because it is very emotional and a great one to yearn to.
