Atlanta has always been one of the biggest cities, constantly producing rap talent from T.I. to Outkast, Future, Gucci Mane, Playboi Carti, and Young Thug. There are plenty of upcoming artists in the underground who continue to make waves from Atlanta. Still, I think one sticks out the most as an artist who can truly be as influential and defining for years to come and be the next Atlanta great for his generation. You need to know about Che.
Che, or Chase Shaun Mitchell, is a 20-year-old Atlanta artist who has been making waves in the rap underground in recent years. Che has been rapping since the early 2020s and continues to grow and evolve his sound. Some of his earliest hits, like “Miley Cyrus,” “wtf,” and one of his most notable tracks, “Pizza Time,” all garnered attention from critics and rap fans alike. Che’s early work was completely different from what he is known for now. His earlier songs were slow, melodic, and very low in energy, something you could vibe to. However, he always kept dropping hints of what his true intentions were. Some songs sounded completely different from what fans were used to, but that all led up to his first major change in sound. In 2024, he made a true statement and became known in the current underground scene with his first album, Sayso Says.
Sayso Says is where Che began to define himself. The album was built on the back of sampling Japanese-inspired songs and the EDM duo Crystal Castles. Che sampled multiple Crystal Castles songs throughout the album. The project was truly one of a kind and had an interesting album cover to match. Sayso Says was a mix of EDM elements and rap, blending his current sound with a stronger lean into EDM. But as soon as people got used to that sound, he came out with an even bigger and louder statement. On July 18, 2025, Che released REST IN BASS.
REST IN BASS is an album that pushes your expectations of how far modern rap can go, how much distortion can be warped, and how loud songs can really get. It is an album with the desire to change the current rap scene as we know it. REST IN BASS is in your face, loud, powerful, and pushes the limits of what rap can be and how it is viewed. It is truly one of a kind. The album is built on the sound that had been creeping up since the release of Whole Lotta Red by Playboi Carti. Rage music has been growing rapidly, and Che decided to take the idea of what rage is in the current rap scene and push it even further, creating songs that are so loud they will send you out of your body and bass so strong it might blow out your speakers.
The album is unapologetic about how it sounds, with beats crashing into your ears and leaving them shaking, truly living up to its name, REST IN BASS. Songs like “Dior Leopard” have a mesmerizing, suction-like sound that starts loud and pungent, but by the second half becomes slow and mellow, almost like a completely new song has begun.
The album is littered with loud, crashing, and distorted beats. Che and REST IN BASS were truly an anomaly in the underground scene, with some people saying it had no place in rap and others saying this is what rap can be and that this is the future.
Che has continued to add to his discography, pushing his sound even further with his two most recent tapes, which have garnered attention as well. With the first one, Fully Loaded, Che introduced completely new vocals. He transformed his voice into something almost unrecognizable, making it sound like it wasn’t even the same person who had released his previous music. Making his voice completely deep and unrecognizable adds another layer to his music. These tapes still feature strong, harsh beats, but now they are paired with a deep voice that complements the production as he raps over them, using his voice almost as an instrument. His second tape, Empty Clip, puts together everything he has been working with so far into one project, featuring a little bit of everything while still bringing something new to it.
As Che continues to put out music and push the boundaries of what rap is in these early steps into stardom, he continues to separate himself with his sound. We will just have to wait and see whether things work out for Che. As he continues to grow, he has the opportunity to be one of the faces of the next generation, leading the way from Atlanta.
