texasstaterisingstarsignA TransAsia passenger plane clipped a bridge and crashed into a river in Taiwan this morning killing 23 people. According to CNN, 58 people were on the flight, 23 were confirmed dead, 15 injured and 20 people are still missing. Two people were driving on the bridge when the plane hit, and they were injured as well, but are now in stable condition. Taiwan’s Civil Aeronautics Administration said the plane completed a safety check last month and is less than a year old. The agency didn’t say what may have caused the crash.

The Texas State Student Government will be having a Presidential Debate on February 9th. The voting period will begin on February 16th and the election announcement will be held on Feb 19th. For more information, please visit the Texas State Student Government website.

Torchy’s Tacos has announced that they will commemorate the grand opening of their first San Marcos area Torchy’s with a public preview of the new restaurant on February 16th from 6 to 9 p.m. Torchy’s company spokeswoman Brittany Platt said they plan to “give the house away”. The grand opening will take place on February 17th.

Pat Green’s fiddler, Brendon Anthony has retired from touring and is now tapped by Governor Greg Abbott as the Director of the Texas Music Office, his office announced on Friday. The Texas Music Office is housed in the governor’s office and according to state statute, the Texas Music Office is expected to promote the development of the music industry in the state by informing members of that industry and the public about the many resources that are available in the state of Texas for music production. Anthony and Abbott’s chief of staff crossed paths often and became close as Anthony was getting his start in Austin. Anthony will start Monday as he would spend the first initial weeks on the job developing his plans for the office.

Last night the San Marcos City Council approved an Ordinance creating a designated permit area on a section of Ridgeway drive requiring a permit to park from 8 am to 5 pm on weekdays. Kelly Slade spoke in opposition of the Ordinance defending students who may park on Ridgeway Drive. Though the Council approved the ordinance on a 6 to 1 vote, Jude Prather was seen after the meeting apologizing to Kelly Slade.
