Texas State traveled to Houston Wednesday to begin a four game road trip. The Bobcats lost 8-4 to the Rice Owls, but freshman Jonathan Ortega had a stand out evening. Ortega went 3-for-5 including two RBIs, two stolen bases and scoring a run for the Cats.
The Bobcats scored first on a sac fly by Granger Studdard in the top of the third. Rice responded with a run of their own to tie the game in the bottom of the inning. In the fourth inning, the Bobcats tallied three more runs off of hits by Cory Geisler and Ortega to take a decent lead.
In the fifth, Rice had runners at the corners with no outs after a hit by pitch. The Bobcats then let in a run off their one error of the game. The Owls then caught fire scoring four more runs, which ended the night for the Bobcats starting pitcher, Brandon Lewis. The Bobcats couldn’t seem to find their offense for the rest of the game.
The Bobcats are now 3-2 overall and are currently on a two-game losing streak after starting the season 3-0.
Texas State will continue their road trip over the weekend as they take part in the Kleberg College Classic in Corpus Christi.
