Healthy Eating on Campus

College students face many challenges when it comes to eating right and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The phrase “freshman 15” can be heard almost anytime along with a tale of how a student gained “x” amount of weight since coming to college.

It is so easy to stop by Chick-Fil-A or Whataburger after a long day because it’s fast, easy, and the food is good. However, having all that fast food around isn’t making it easier for people adjusting their diets and trying to take care of their bodies.

As a senior, I know how hard it is to find good, affordable food on campus. Sure, the food tastes fine, but it’s not the healthiest and you are limited to eating the same things a lot of the time. So, here’s a list of some of the healthy eating options on campus that are worth your time;

Dining Halls:

Commons and Harris offer more for a meal trade than most places on campus. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner so you’re able to go at any time of the day and be satisfied with your meal. They are also vegan and vegetarian friendly.

Freshens:

Freshens offers a variety of smoothies filled with fruits, vegetables, and your choice of a booster for a meal trade. This is the perfect place to go for a healthy snack in between classes. They also serve rice bowls and a number of crepes for your sweet or savory cravings.

Create:

Create offers subs or salads as a healthy substitute for lunch or dinner. Your meal trade will go a long way at this location because of all the options available for you. They are also vegan and vegetarian friendly. The best part is their convenient location in Jones, so if you’re ever in the area be sure to stop by.

Asado:

Asado is the place to go for burrito bowls with a number of options that are healthy and filling. They offer a variety of proteins and vegetables for you to create your bowls. They are also vegan and vegetarian friendly. Another plus is their location on campus at Jones Dining Hall.

The list includes places located all over campus, which is also convenient for those students who are commuting. So, if you’re ever in need of something more healthy and fulfilling you’re encouraged to try one of these locations out.
