SAN MARCOS, Texas – The San Marcos Girls’ basketball team were able to hang on to defeat Pieper High School 54-47 on Dec. 3 to extend their win streak to five games.

Junior guard/forward Azariah Fennell, junior forward Melayna Perkins and sophomore guard Rileigh Good each had double figures scoring to lead the way for the Rattlers. Fennell also recorded five steals to lead the game in that department.

Rattler head coach Cooper Haralson spoke on how the team handled Pieper’s attempts to close the deficit.

“Basketball is a game of runs, it’s can you stop there and prolong yours when you get them,” said Haralson. “I just think we did a good job of not letting them take too much advantage of their comeback runs.”

Haralson also spoke about the importance of the squad putting this game in the win column.

“I don’t necessarily put importance on one game over another, but I did know how important this game was to go into district either with a good feeling or with a little bit of regret on what could have been.” said Haralson.

Haralson concluded by speaking about how he feels heading into district play next week.

“Since that Reagan loss I believe this is our fifth straight win. We start with a district bye so it will be good to get our girls some rest,” Haralson said. “ I feel like we are pretty close to firing on all cylinders going into Canyon next friday.”

The Rattlers started off lights out on the defensive end, holding the Warriors to just six first quarter points and holding a 15-6 lead at the end of one.

The Warriors picked it up on the offensive side, outscoring the Rattlers 16-11 in the second quarter cutting the lead to just four at 26-22 at the half.

Both sides were neck and neck through the third quarter, but a 13-3 Rattler run to end the third put the Rattler’s up double digits heading to the fourth.

The Rattlers were able to fend off multiple fourth quarter comeback attempts from the Warriors and played keep away from the Warriors in the final minute to secure the 54-47 win.

The win improves the Rattler’s record to 13-5 on the season with the Rattlers having won five straight. The Rattlers have a district bye on Tuesday before opening up district play against Canyon high school on Friday Dec. 13 at 7:00 P.M.
