SAN MARCOS, Texas – Guard Saniya Burks contributed 22 points for the Texas State Bobcats in the 68-60 home loss to the Chanticleers.
Both teams came into this matchup fresh off of victories from their last contests. This was the first matchup between the Bobcats and Chanticleers this season, meaning both squads were looking at a new opponent.
As the game started, both teams were trading buckets and had no plans of relenting. In the middle of the first quarter, Burks hit her first three of the night, a preview for what the Bobcats were in store to see from her. The score was 12-11 prior to a Chanticleers late quarter run to give themselves a 20-14 lead over Texas State at the end of the quarter.
To start off the second quarter it was all Chanticleers as their lead ballooned to seven with a score of 27-20. Burks responded to CCU’s scoring outburst with her own. She connected from three-point distance on three consecutive possessions to give the Bobcats the lead. The Chanticleers would get themselves to the free throw line to end the first half to regain the lead with the score at 31-29.
The script flipped as the third quarter was all Bobcats. The maroon and gold were firing on all cylinders and put the Chanticleers in a frenzy. With the Bobcats scoring exceptionally in the paint and from three, they built an eight-point lead after forward Jaylin Foster hit a three.

The Chanticleers went on an 8-0 to tie up the game late in the third quarter. The Chanticleers came back due to the Bobcats main issue, turnovers.
Head coach Zenarae Antoine spoke about mishaps and turnovers post-game.
“It is the elephant in the room, everyone knows [this] so we have to clean that up in practice.”
After the Chanticleers 8-0 run, the Bobcats and Chanticleers traded buckets and the Chanticleers ended the quarter with a 49-48 lead.
The fourth quarter began with neither team able to build a lead of their own. The combination of Coastal Carolina capitalizing on their possessions and Texas State turnovers resulted in CCU walking out of Strahan arena with a 68-60 victory.
Despite this loss, Saniya Burks finished off with 22 points on the night and kept the Bobcats in this game.
“What clicked for me was my teammates telling me they needed me. I [was] getting more comfortable on the court tonight, so that’s what made me do what I did tonight.
The Bobcats will be back in Strahan Arena to take on the 9-12 Western Michigan Broncos on Feb. 8 at 2 p.m. for the Sun Belt Conference versus MAC Challenge.
