Despite the bad reputation of having cholesterol problems running in my family, I am obsessed with burgers. I constantly crave them even though I KNOW they’re awful for my health if I eat too many of them. On the plus side, I know exactly where to go for a good burger. If you say, “A burger is a burger,” you won’t think that way after this. These places are in no particular order because they are all wonderful

MoeBetta Burgers
MoeBetta Burgers is located right off of University Drive and every time I suggest it, I get a weird look followed by the question, “Is it actually good?” I wouldn’t suggest it if it weren’t! This is where you go if you want a good, classic American burger. The beef is not the kind they just pull out of a drawer and sit under a heat lamp, they actually throw it on a grill. They make this amazing sauce called “MoeBetta Sauce” that is pretty similar to Cane’s or Zaxby’s, but creamier. If you get it on your burger, it adds great flavor to the beef. I suggest getting an extra ram of it to dip your fries in.

Tap Room Pub & Grill
This one is an obvious choice. I personally don’t believe you are officially a Bobcat until you have gotten a burger from Tap Room. They have so many different choices and their burgers can stack up to be 5 inches. My personal favorite is the Queso Burger, but another favorite of a lot of people in this town tends to be the Works Burger. Either way, this is the place to go if you want a semi-fancy burger for a decent price. And if you pair it with friends and a nice beer on the side, it’s the perfect combination. They have plenty of beer on tap and they’re always running specials. Tap Room can be found on the square facing the courthouse on Hopkins St.

Gil’s Broiler
Gil’s is known more for their Manske Rolls (another thing you should eat to become an official Bobcat), but I also found out this past summer how great their burgers are. This is the sort of burger you get when you don’t want anything too pricey or flashy, but still impressively good. It’s the sort of burger that melts in your mouth, coming straight off the grill onto a classic paper tray with a big handful of fries. Gil’s Broiler is located right next to San Marvelous on the square!

Big Kahuna
My best friend took me to this food truck at the beginning of football season, and I had my doubts, but they were changed as soon as I tried their burger. I can’t remember exactly what was on it, but I remember there was shredded pork on top with slices of avocado and some sort of cheese sauce. I know that sounds vague, but I can guarantee satisfaction with this one. Big Kahuna is located off CM Allen Parkway at the Hitch (food trailer park).

San Marcos is packed with great food and I haven’t tried all the burgers in town, but these four are definitely at the top of the list and have even won awards for having some of the best burgers in town. So if you haven’t tried them yet, do it! It’s good for your soul.
